Huernia
hystrix
is one of a number
of plant
species which are presently being tested for their
suitability to be grown as Green Roof
plants in the Durban region that have initially shown good results.
They all
occur naturally within a radius of 50 km of the Durban
city centre
Huernia
hystrix is found growing amongst rocks in
hot dry places both in
full sun and in shade in a number of localities in the Durban
area.
Growth
habit
Huernia
hystrix is a dwarf stem succulent which is heavily exploited for
traditional medicine by the Zulu people of Kwa Zulu Natal.
Propagation
Huernia
hystrix reproduce naturally by
means of seed which germinates readily under ideal
conditions. In cultivation they can
be propagated vegetatively by subdivision, by tissue culture as well as from seed.
Decorative
value
Huernia
hystrix plants are being grown for their
very attractive growth form as well as
their
interesting flowers
Drought resistance
Huernia
hystrix plants are extremely drought
resistant, they are usually found growing in very
hot
and dry stony places.
Disease and pest resistance
Huernia
hystrix susceptible to attack by mealy bug
if they are grown
in a nutrient rich medium
Suitability as Green Roof plants
Huernia
hystrix plants are valuable in combination
with other plants that do
not have a vigorous nature because of their extreme heat and drought
tolerance and ability to grow in very shallow dry soils.
Biodiversity value in the Green
Roof landscape
A number of
butterflies use Huernia
hystrix as their larval host plants such as
the
African Monarch Danaus chrysippus
aegyptius . Their flowers
attract
large numbers of flies.
Cautions and precautions in the Green Roof
application
Care
must be taken to ensure good drainage and to prevent rotting
during establishment. Be careful not to over fertilize.
